A traveler whose cruise changed from Bermuda to Saint John, New Brunswick, asked Reddit how to make the replacement stop worthwhile. The question is a useful one for anyone who planned a beach trip and suddenly needs a different kind of day ashore.
The October discussion describes the passenger's disappointment and asks for ideas. We have not independently verified that person's reservation, and the post does not establish the terms for every rerouted cruise. The destination advice can still be checked against local sources.
Start with the ship's notice
Before choosing an activity, confirm the arrival time, all-aboard deadline and where the ship will berth. Use the latest notice for your sailing. A schedule from another passenger may be out of date or refer to a different ship.
Check whether an excursion you booked through the line has been changed or canceled. Contact an independent provider separately if your plans no longer fit. Do not assume a compensation offer on another departure also applies to yours.
Once the usable time ashore is clear, build a modest plan around it. A replacement port day does not need to become a race to cover every attraction.
The City Market is a concrete starting point
Discover Saint John describes the City Market as Canada's oldest continuing farmers' market and a National Historic Site. It offers a place to begin researching a visit rather than treating the city as an empty space between sea days.
Check the current opening schedule before heading there. A market's normal hours and a ship's call do not necessarily align. If food is part of the plan, leave room to browse instead of scheduling every minute.
For travelers who prefer an easy city day, choose a small number of stops that interest the group. That can be more satisfying than booking a long outing simply because the original beach plan disappeared.
Reversing Falls depends on conditions
Norwegian's Saint John Highlights excursion description identifies the Reversing Falls phenomenon and explicitly notes that seeing the river reverse depends on favorable tidal conditions. It also includes the Old City Market and Fort Howe.
That qualification matters. A famous sight is not a promise of the same view at every hour. Check the timing with an official visitor source or the excursion provider rather than assuming any visit will show the full effect.
Do not book an outing only from a dramatic photograph. Ask about transport time, walking, accessibility and what happens in poor weather.
Allow the new trip to be different
Saint John cannot deliver the same experience as Bermuda. Trying to recreate the canceled day may make every alternative feel disappointing. Choose what is interesting about the replacement rather than measuring it only against what was lost.
Our suggestion is one priority activity, an unhurried meal or market stop, and a clear return plan. Leave extra time if you are traveling independently.
The Reddit discussion is one selected account, not evidence that every passenger dislikes the change. For the separate news about a specific reroute, see our Independence of the Seas report. Your own ship's notice remains the source for the schedule and any offer attached to your booking.
