Carnival Celebration guests get a free ride from PortMiami to Miami's airport in a new pilot
Carnival and Miami-Dade County are testing free one-way shuttles from the ship to Miami International Airport on busy port days, a trial set to run through April 2027.

Getting from the ship to the airport on a busy Miami morning can be the most stressful part of a cruise. Carnival is now testing a fix for guests on one of its biggest ships. Passengers leaving Carnival Celebration at PortMiami can get a free shuttle to Miami International Airport on select dates, as part of a pilot with Miami-Dade County.
How the free shuttle works
Miami-Dade County announced the pilot on Oct. 16. The county said Carnival is offering free shuttle transfers to the airport for Celebration guests on select dates, starting in October 2026. The goal is to ease traffic at the port on its busiest days.
Frommer's reported on Nov. 3 that the rides start with the Nov. 8 sailing. Here is what the report says guests should know:
- Guests ask about the shuttle once they are on board.
- If you already paid Carnival for an airport transfer, you can get that money back.
- The ride runs one way only, from the ship to Miami International Airport.
- There is no free ride to Fort Lauderdale's airport.
- The test is set to run through April 2027.
Frommer's noted that Celebration carries almost 5,400 guests at double occupancy. Moving even part of that crowd onto shuttles means fewer cars and ride-share pickups at the terminal curb.
Why PortMiami needs it
PortMiami calls itself the Cruise Capital of the World, and its peak season is packed. The county said the high season has 81 days with seven to 10 cruise ships in port at the same time. On those days, thousands of guests get off ships while thousands more arrive to board.
The Carnival test follows a similar effort by Royal Caribbean. The county said Royal Caribbean has an ongoing program for guests on Icon of the Seas.
"These improvements help us reduce congestion, enhance safety and strengthen the overall journey from curb to cruise," said Jonathan Daniels, director and CEO of PortMiami, in the county's release.
Other changes at the port
The shuttle is one part of a larger plan to keep traffic moving. The county is asking drivers to use the right entrance for their terminal.
| Terminals | Best way in |
|---|---|
| AA, A, B, C and D | Port of Miami Tunnel |
| E, F, G, J and V | Port Boulevard Bridge |
The port is also using an AI tool from GridMatrix to track traffic and spot jams as they form. The county also said the port marked its 10 millionth passenger on Sept. 14, 2026, a sign of how much traffic the area handles.
What it means for Celebration guests
If you are sailing on Carnival Celebration from Miami this winter, the shuttle could save you a cab or ride-share fare. It may also save time on a crowded morning. A few tips:
- Ask at Guest Services early in your cruise if the free ride is offered on your date.
- If you prepaid a Carnival transfer, ask how the refund works.
- Book a flight that leaves late enough to cover the trip and airport security. Busy port days can still bring delays.
- If you are flying out of Fort Lauderdale, plan your own ride. The free shuttle only goes to Miami International.
Carnival has not said if the pilot will expand to other ships or ports. The outcome of the test through April 2027 should show if free airport rides become a regular part of sailing from Miami.
