Carnival Cruise Line is testing a small sticker that has sparked a big debate. Some guests who prepaid their gratuities are finding a "Crew love" sticker on their Sail & Sign card that reads "I pre-paid my gratuities." The line has confirmed it is real and says it is part of a pilot program.

The sticker drew wide attention on social media in the last week of October, including on X. Here is what we know, what Carnival says and what it means for your next cruise.

How it came to light

Cruise Hive reported that a TikTok video posted on Oct. 28 showed the sticker. The card came from an Oct. 18 sailing of Carnival Panorama, a six-night Mexican Riviera trip from Long Beach. The light blue sticker sits in the top corner of the card, with hearts and polka dots around the words.

The same guest also found a thank-you card in the cabin. "On behalf of our entire team, thank you for pre-paying your gratuities," it reads. "Your support is greatly appreciated and helps recognize the many team members who work together to make your cruise vacation fun, memorable, and enjoyable."

Many people first thought the image was fake. Carnival brand ambassador John Heald confirmed it in an email reply to a guest: "Thank you, yes that is correct and we have only just started this."

What Carnival says

In a statement reported by TravelPulse and Cruise Hive, a Carnival spokesperson said the gratuity program makes sure tips are shared among guest-facing and behind-the-scenes crew.

"Our team members provide great service to every guest," the statement said. "The 'Crew Love' stickers and thank-you notes are simply a way to let our crew know that a guest has prepaid their gratuities, while giving those guests a little recognition for their generosity. This is one component of a broader pilot, and we're listening to feedback as we evaluate it."

So this is a test, not a confirmed fleetwide policy. Carnival has not said which ships are in the pilot or how long it will run.

Why some cruisers are upset

Reactions have been split. Some guests like the thank-you. Many others say it is in poor taste and would rather not have it.

The biggest worry is fairness. Some commenters fear crew might treat guests differently based on the sticker. Others point out that guests who don't prepay still pay gratuities. Carnival adds them to each guest's onboard account automatically during the cruise. Some people simply prefer not to hand over that money months before they sail.

What gratuities cost on Carnival

Carnival's gratuity policy currently charges $17 per person, per day in standard cabins and $19 per person, per day in suites, according to Cruise Hive. You can prepay before you sail, or the charge posts to your account on board.

Cruise Hive also noticed that Carnival's gratuity FAQ page was updated recently. An archived version from Aug. 26, 2026 said guests could adjust gratuities on board at their discretion. That line is no longer on the page. The current page does not say adjustments are banned either. It just no longer mentions them.

What this means for you

The sticker does not change what you owe. Whether you prepay or let the charge post on board, the daily rate is the same.

If you would rather skip the sticker, you can wait and let gratuities post to your onboard account. Carnival says it is listening to feedback, so the pilot may change.
