What is changing
Carnival Cruise Line is cutting its Australian fleet. Carnival Luminosa and Carnival Adventure will both leave Australia in March 2028.
Carnival Luminosa makes its final voyage from Sydney on March 15, 2028. It has sailed seasonally from Brisbane since cruising restarted in 2022. Carnival Adventure leaves Sydney on March 20, 2028. Carnival says it "will not return to Australia as originally planned."
Two ships stay. Carnival Splendor keeps sailing year-round from Sydney, and Carnival Encounter keeps sailing year-round from Brisbane.
Why Carnival says it is leaving
Carnival plans where its ships go years ahead. It says the choice reflects "long-term certainty and globally competitive operating conditions."
The key issue is the rules for cruise ships that sail between Australian ports. Carnival says the federal government recently extended the industry's ability to do this until the end of 2028. The government is still working on a long-term licensing system.
Peter Little, Carnival's country manager, called the extension "a welcome but interim step." He said Carnival is more exposed to local changes than lines that only visit for a season. Carnival says it is the only cruise line that sails year-round from Australia.
He added that Carnival will keep working with the government on the future rules.
What it means if you want to sail them
You still have about 18 months. Little said guests should use that time, and noted that both ships have sailed to the South Pacific, including Vanuatu, New Caledonia and Papua New Guinea.
If you have a cruise booked on either ship after March 2028, check with Carnival or your travel advisor. The release does not say what happens to bookings past those dates.
Carnival says it will release its 2028/29 program for Carnival Splendor and Carnival Encounter in the coming weeks.
Two of Carnival's roomiest ships are the ones leaving
Cruise Frog tracks a space figure for each ship. It is the passenger space ratio, or gross tonnage divided by guests. A higher number usually means more room per person on deck and in public areas.
By our data, both departing ships are near the top of Carnival's fleet:
| Ship | Guests | Space ratio |
|---|---|---|
| Carnival Encounter (stays) | 2,600 | 41.9 |
| Carnival Adventure (leaves) | 2,636 | 41.3 |
| Carnival Luminosa (leaves) | 2,260 | 41.0 |
| Carnival Splendor (stays) | 3,012 | 37.7 |
For comparison, the big Excel-class Carnival Celebration scores 34.1 on the same measure. So Australia is losing two of the less crowded ships in Carnival's lineup. Carnival Encounter, which stays, has the highest figure of the four.
The bigger picture
Losing two ships means fewer Carnival cabins sailing from Sydney and Brisbane after March 2028. Whether other lines fill that gap will likely depend on the same long-term rules Carnival is waiting on.
