Guests on the next sailing get a shorter trip.","textStyle":"body","layout":"text"},{"role":"photo","URL":"https://dygjeuxqaprt3.cloudfront.net/margaritavilleatsea.com-1166063475/cms/cache/v2/680779a98f304.jpg/1920x1080/fit;c:68,724,2982,2362/80/99a2176424b37a0b15a2e09db0766c7d.jpg","caption":"Margaritaville at Sea Paradise sailing in open water","accessibilityCaption":"Margaritaville at Sea Paradise sailing in open water","layout":"photo"},{"role":"caption","text":"Margaritaville at Sea Paradise sailing in open water","textStyle":"caption","layout":"text"},{"role":"body","format":"markdown","text":"The [Port of Palm Beach](https://portofpalmbeach.com/AlertCenter.aspx?AID=Attention-Margaritaville-at-Sea-cruise-p-39) posted the change on Monday, October 26. It said severe weather in the Palm Beach area means the ship \"will not be able to return to the Port of Palm Beach on Tuesday, October 27, as scheduled.\" Weather permitting, Paradise now expects to arrive on Wednesday, October 28.\n\n## What happened on this cruise\n\nParadise left Palm Beach on Friday, October 23, on a four-night trip. It made its stop in Key West as planned, according to [Cruise Hive](https://www.cruisehive.com/margaritaville-at-sea-paradise-cruise-extended-freeport-call-cancelled/221923).\n\nThe second stop was Freeport, in The Bahamas, on Monday, October 26. High winds and dangerous swells made that call impossible. The ship spent Monday at sea instead. Cruise Hive reports that tours booked through the cruise line for Freeport were canceled and refunded to guests' onboard accounts.\n\nThen came the second problem. The port authority told the ship it could not come back on Tuesday morning. A letter left in guest cabins explained the change.\n\n\"Extreme weather is also expected at the Port of Palm Beach, and the port authority has advised that we cannot return on Tuesday morning as scheduled,\" the letter said, as quoted by Cruise Hive. \"As a result, our sailing will be extended by one full day, and we will now return to Palm Beach on Wednesday, October 28.\"\n\nTo fill the extra day, the ship was set to call at Nassau on Tuesday. Guests with drink or Wi-Fi packages priced for the whole cruise get the extra day at no added cost, Cruise Hive reports.\n\n## The next sailing gets shorter\n\nThe knock-on effect lands on the next group of guests. Their trip was a three-night \"Nassau Escape\" leaving Tuesday, October 27. It was planned as a day at sea on Wednesday, a stop in Nassau from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, and a return to Palm Beach on Friday, October 30.\n\nWith Paradise now due back on Wednesday, that cruise starts late. The line has told booked guests that the trip is shorter. Cruise Hive notes that Palm Beach and Nassau are about 200 miles apart, so the ship may still keep most of the plan and lose only the sea day. The cruise line had not confirmed the final schedule when the port posted its notice.\n\n## What guests on the shorter cruise get\n\nThe notice posted by the port spells out the terms:\n\n* **A prorated refund for per-day packages.** If you bought a package priced by the day, such as drinks or Wi-Fi, you get a partial refund as Refund Credit on your cabin account.\n* **Credit with cash value.** Refund Credit can go toward service charges or gratuities. Any unused balance goes back to your original form of payment about 7 to 10 business days after the cruise.\n* **A $50 Future Cruise Credit** for each stateroom, good toward a future Margaritaville at Sea sailing.\n* **Free rebooking.** If you would rather sail another time, you can move your October 27 cruise with no rebooking fees by calling 1.800.814.7100.\n\nThe notice also warns that refund amounts are based on what was known on Monday. They may change if the weather, the route or port guidance changes.\n\n## Other ships felt it too\n\nParadise was not the only ship to change plans. Cruise Hive also reported that MSC Seashore skipped its overnight at MSC's Ocean Cay and headed for Nassau on October 27.\n\n## Tips if you sail short cruises in the fall\n\nShort trips from Florida are popular, but they leave little room when the weather turns. A few habits help:\n\n* **Book flights with a buffer.** A one-day delay on a four-night cruise can wreck a tight flight home.\n* **Keep your contact details current.** Margaritaville told the next group of guests by email and text, according to Cruise Hive.\n* **Read the fine print on credits.** Refund Credit and Future Cruise Credit are not the same thing. One applies to the current cruise and has cash value. The other only counts toward a future booking.\n\nWant to know more about the line?
