They got Halifax, Nova Scotia, instead. Royal Caribbean turned the ship north to dodge a strong storm forming off the U.S. East Coast. The swap has become one of the most talked-about cruise stories on X this week, as passengers swapped sunscreen for hoodies. Here is what changed, and what the line is paying back.\n\n## From the Bahamas to Nova Scotia\n\nThe seven-night sailing left Cape Liberty in Bayonne, New Jersey, on October 18. It was meant to head south to Florida and the Bahamas. But the National Hurricane Center was tracking a storm-force low, not a tropical storm, expected to form off the southeastern U.S. It warned of strong winds, coastal flooding and dangerous surf along parts of the East Coast.\n\nRoyal Caribbean told guests those conditions would make a safe and comfortable trip to Florida and the Bahamas hard. All three ports were canceled. Sea days filled the gaps, and Halifax became the only port of call.\n\n## A longer day in Halifax\n\nAt first, the ship was due to leave Halifax at 8 a.m. That would have left guests with little more than an evening and a night in port. Royal Caribbean later pushed the departure back to 6 p.m. The new plan had Oasis in Halifax from 6 p.m. on October 20 to 6 p.m. on October 21. That is 24 hours alongside, 10 more than first planned. The ship was still due back in New Jersey on October 25.\n\nHalifax was forecast to reach the mid-50s Fahrenheit. The canceled ports were expected in the upper 70s and low 80s. Guests were told to bring warmer clothes, and some said they had to buy sweaters ashore. Halifax's cruise piers sit on the downtown waterfront, close to restaurants, pubs and the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21. A local tour firm pointed visitors to Peggy's Cove, Georges Island and harbor tours.\n\nReactions were mixed. Some guests were disappointed to trade beaches for a chilly harbor. Others took it in stride. \"I don't think it's a big deal; it's cruise life,\" one longtime cruiser, Debra DelCamp, said, as quoted by CruiseNews. \"For first-time cruisers, I can understand it being confusing or upsetting, but for regulars it's just cruising.\"\n\n## What Royal Caribbean is giving back\n\nRoyal Caribbean set out its offer in a letter to guests, as published by Royal Caribbean Blog. \"We truly appreciate your understanding and flexibility regarding this unexpected change,\" the letter said.\n\nEach guest gets refundable onboard credit based on cabin type. The first and second guests in a cabin receive:","textStyle":"body","layout":"text"},{"role":"htmltable","html":"<table><tr><th>Cabin type</th><th>Credit per guest</th></tr><tr><td>Inside and oceanview</td><td>$200</td></tr><tr><td>Balcony and Neighborhood Balcony</td><td>$300</td></tr><tr><td>Suite</td><td>$600</td></tr></table>","layout":"text"},{"role":"body","format":"markdown","text":"Third and additional guests get $100 each in any cabin. So two people sharing a balcony get $600 between them, and two in a suite get $1,200. Because the credit is refundable, any unspent amount goes back to the card on the onboard account after the cruise.\n\nOn top of that, each paid guest gets a 50% future cruise credit \"as a gesture of goodwill.\" Royal Caribbean said the credits should arrive by November 1, 2026. Guests must book their next sailing by October 18, 2027. Shore trips bought through Royal Caribbean for the canceled ports are refunded to the onboard account. Tours booked with outside firms have to be refunded by those firms.\n\n## Not the first weather detour\n\nIt is the second weather problem for Oasis this fall. In September, a nor'easter delayed the ship's return to Cape Liberty, and a Port Canaveral call was dropped on the next cruise.\n\nFall cruises from the Northeast often run this risk. Storms can block the route south to the Bahamas or Bermuda, and lines may swap in Canada or New England ports at short notice. If you sail from New York or New Jersey in the fall, pack a warm layer, and read your cruise line's policy on itinerary changes before you book outside tours.\n\n## About the ship\n\nOasis of the Seas entered service in 2009 as the first ship in the Oasis class. It held the title of world's largest cruise ship class until Icon of the Seas arrived in 2024. The ship measures about 226,800 gross tons and carries up to about 5,600 guests. It splits its year between Fort Lauderdale in winter and Cape Liberty in summer and fall.\n\n## Sources\n\n* [Royal Caribbean Blog: the line's letter to guests](https://www.royalcaribbeanblog.com/2026/10/18/royal-caribbean-diverts-cruise-ship-canada-due-east-coast-storm)\n* [CruiseNews on the longer Halifax call](https://www.cruisenews.io/oasis-of-the-seas-rerouted-to-halifax-as-weather-cancels-bahamas-calls/)\n* [Cruise Hive on the extended stay](https://www.cruisehive.com/royal-caribbean-extends-oasis-of-the-seas-halifax-stay-after-weather-reroute/221310)\n* [Oasis of the Seas on Cruise Frog](https://cruisesfrog.com/ships/oasis-of-the-seas)","textStyle":"body","layout":"text"}]}
