Oceania Cruises is saying goodbye to Insignia, the ship that helped launch the line. German operator Phoenix Reisen announced it will sail the 1998-built ship as Alvara starting in November 2027. Terms were not disclosed.
The move closes a chapter for Oceania. Insignia is the last of its four original small ships to get an exit plan.
When Insignia leaves
Oceania says Insignia is expected to leave its fleet in September 2027. Eight published Oceania cruises will be canceled as a result, according to The Maritime Executive.
If you are booked on Insignia, watch your email and talk to your travel advisor. Oceania is the one to confirm whether your sailing is affected and what it is offering.
The ship's new life as Alvara
Phoenix Reisen says the ship will go to Lloyd Werft in Bremerhaven in September 2027. There it will get Phoenix's paint scheme and a few changes inside. Phoenix plans to carry about 700 guests.
Seatrade Cruise News and Baird Maritime report that BSM will manage the ship and is its reported owner, with Phoenix operating it under a charter. Hotel services will be run by sea chefs.
"With Alvara, we are welcoming a fantastic ship into our Phoenix family," said Phoenix Reisen managing director Benjamin Krumpen. "The ship is very well maintained, in excellent technical condition, and already has a shore power connection."
The first Alvara cruises
Alvara's first program includes several short trips, a Christmas cruise and two longer Mediterranean voyages. Early sailings are round trips from Hamburg.
The first is a five-night cruise to Rotterdam and Amsterdam that starts Nov. 11, 2027. Other early trips head to the English Channel, with calls such as Dover and Antwerp, and to Scandinavia.
Phoenix will name the ship in Hamburg on Nov. 26, 2027. That date marks the company's 54th anniversary. Alvara will join Amadea, Amera and Artania, bringing Phoenix's ocean fleet to four ships.
A ship with a long history
Insignia entered service in 1998 as R One for Renaissance Cruises. It was the first of a class of eight similar ships. After Renaissance went bankrupt in 2001, the ship became Insignia as Oceania started up. Oceania later bought four of the eight ships.
The ship is about 592 feet long and measures 30,277 gross tons. It carries roughly 670 to 680 guests in Oceania service.
Insignia was once set to become a residential ship for Crescent Seas. That charter was canceled, and the ship stayed with Oceania.
Where the rest of the class stands
The Maritime Executive lays out the fate of all four original Oceania ships:
- Regatta recently left Oceania for an Australian tour operator under a two-year charter.
- Sirena will leave the fleet in 2028 for a new startup in Germany.
- Insignia goes to Phoenix Reisen as Alvara in 2027.
- Nautica will be refitted in late 2027 as Oceania Aurelia, with larger cabins and fewer guests.
Parent company Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings has called the move part of a plan to match the Oceania fleet to its luxury positioning.
Oceania's next ships
Oceania's growth now comes from bigger ships. Oceania Sonata, at 86,000 gross tons and 1,390 guests, is set to enter service in August 2027. Four sister ships are on order for 2029, 2032, 2035 and 2037, according to The Maritime Executive.
If you love small ships, this is the time to sail Insignia, Sirena or Nautica before they change. See the ship's specs on our Oceania Insignia page and the full fleet on our Oceania Cruises page.
