Guests boarding Utopia of the Seas in Port Canaveral on Sunday may have seen an alarming message online. An email shared on Reddit claimed the ship would skip the Bahamas and sail to Cozumel, Mexico, instead. Royal Caribbean says that email did not come from the cruise line.
"Utopia is not scheduled to go to Mexico this week, and no guest communication regarding such a change was sent out by our team," Royal Caribbean told Cruise Hive, which first reported the story.
What the fake email claimed
The message looked like a standard itinerary change notice. It said the October 26 sailing would drop its two planned stops, Nassau and Perfect Day at CocoCay. In their place, it said, the ship would call on Cozumel.
The timing made it easy to believe. The email spread just hours before boarding. And the weather gave it a plausible excuse.
The weather backdrop
Rough conditions were in the forecast for the Bahamas. Cruise Hive reported that the Bahamas Department of Meteorology warned of near-gale to gale force winds from October 25 to 27. The same report noted king tides and seas of 9 to 14 feet.
Weather like that does lead cruise lines to change plans at times. So a notice about a swap to Mexico would not seem strange to many guests. That is likely why the fake message caught on.
Where Utopia is actually going
Royal Caribbean says the ship is sailing its normal short Bahamas route. Utopia of the Seas left Port Canaveral on October 26. It is scheduled to call on Nassau and Perfect Day at CocoCay, the line's private island. The ship is due back in Port Canaveral on Friday, October 30.
As with any cruise, the captain can still change the plan if weather makes a port unsafe. But as of Sunday, Royal Caribbean said no change to Mexico was planned and no such message had been sent.
Not the first fake notice this month
This is the second fake Royal Caribbean letter to make the rounds in about a week. Cruise Hive reported that a phony notice about a change to gratuities spread less than a week earlier.
Fake notices like these can do real harm. A guest might rebook flights, cancel a shore tour or change travel plans based on false news. Some fake messages also try to get people to click links or share personal details.
How to check a change notice
If you get an email about a change to your cruise, take a minute before you act on it. A few simple steps help:
- Check your booking in the cruise line's own app or website, by typing the address yourself.
- Call the cruise line or your travel agent and ask if the change is real.
- Be wary of screenshots shared on social media, since they are easy to fake.
- Do not click links or open files in a message you are unsure about.
Real itinerary changes will show up in your booking with the cruise line. If a notice only exists in a forum post, treat it with care.
