The idea for it is much older. Richard Branson's Virgin Group announced the company in December 2014, a full six and a half years before that first sailing. Here is how a cruise line with no ships became a four-ship fleet, and what has happened since.","textStyle":"body","layout":"text"},{"role":"body","format":"markdown","text":"## The 2014 announcement\n\nOn December 4, 2014, Virgin Group announced the formation of Virgin Cruises, a new cruise line. In the same announcement it named a CEO and its lead investment partner, Bain Capital. [Bain published the release](https://www.baincapital.com/news/virgin-group-announces-plans-make-waves-cruise-industry). It did not disclose the financial terms.\n\nTom McAlpin was the first CEO. He had most recently run The World, a residential cruise ship, and he had been president of Disney Cruise Line as part of its founding management team. Virgin said the line would be based in the Miami and Fort Lauderdale area and would build two ships. It did not say when it would start sailing.\n\nBranson set the tone. \"We plan to shake up the cruise industry and deliver a holiday that customers will absolutely love,\" he said in the release. Bain's Stephen Pagliuca said Virgin Cruises would \"help reshape consumers' expectations of what a cruise experience can be.\"\n\n## Miami and Fincantieri\n\nBranson made the next announcement in person. In June 2015 he flew a helicopter across Biscayne Bay in Miami, landed at Museum Park and raised a Virgin Cruises flag with McAlpin. He said the line had picked PortMiami as home port for its first ship, due in 2020. [Bain's release on the event](https://www.baincapital.com/news/sir-richard-branson-raises-virgin-cruises-flag-miami) also said Virgin had signed a binding letter of intent with Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri for three mid-size ships of about 110,000 gross tons each. They were due in 2020, 2021 and 2022.\n\nOn October 18, 2016, at another Miami event, the company [announced it would be renamed Virgin Voyages](https://www.marinelog.com/news/branson-rebrands-cruise-venture-as-virgin-voyages/), according to Marine Log. The letter of intent for the ships had been firmed up. Fincantieri later said the [construction contracts took effect on December 20, 2016](https://www.fincantieri.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2016/fincantieri-and-virgin-voyages-contracts-now-effective). It put their value at about 2 billion euros for three ships, all to be built at its Sestri Ponente yard in Genoa.\n\nIn October 2018, Fincantieri and Virgin [signed a contract worth about 700 million euros](https://www.fincantieri.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2018/fincantieri-will-build-fourth-ship-for-virgin-voyages) for a fourth sister ship. It was due at the end of 2023.\n\n## Adults only, no buffet, no tips\n\nVirgin sold the ships as something other than a standard cruise. Guests must be 18 or older. The line calls its fleet the Lady Ships, a play on \"your ladyship,\" according to its [fact sheet](https://www.virginvoyages.com/dam/jcr:2ac6ce68-b4a7-4b07-b9be-e2b46489f422/Virgin%20Voyages%20Full%20Fact%20Sheet%202025.pdf).\n\nFood was the biggest break from tradition. In November 2018, Virgin said Scarlet Lady would have more than 20 places to eat, with no buffet and no main dining room. There would be no assigned seating or dining times, and restaurant food was included in the fare, [Seatrade Cruise News reported](https://www.seatrade-cruise.com/food-and-beverage/virgin-dining-no-buffets-main-dining-room-or-upcharges-lots-of-creative-choices). Branson said the ship would have \"no stuffy formalities, boring buffets and no main dining rooms.\"\n\nThe venues included a steakhouse called Wake, a vegetarian restaurant called Razzle Dazzle with meat add-ons, Korean barbecue with grills built into the tables, a Mexican restaurant, an Italian trattoria and The Galley, a food hall with more than eight shops and carts.\n\nTipping worked differently too. Virgin bundled service gratuities into the fare, so guests were not asked to tip. That changed on October 7, 2025, when the line began listing gratuities as a separate charge. Guests can prepay $20 per person per night or pay $22 onboard. Virgin said the [total cost of a voyage did not change](https://www.virginvoyages.com/press/latest-releases/voyagefairchoices) and that no tipping is expected anywhere onboard. The line still describes the policy as a no-tipping one. You can read the details on our [Virgin Voyages line page](https://cruisesfrog.com/cruise-lines/virgin-voyages).\n\n## Scarlet Lady and the pandemic delay\n\nFincantieri [delivered Scarlet Lady](https://www.fincantieri.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2020/fincantieri-delivers-scarlet-lady-the-first-virgin-voyages-ship) on February 14, 2020, at Genoa. The ship is about 110,000 gross tons and 278 meters long. She has more than 1,400 guest cabins for more than 2,770 passengers, plus 1,160 crew.\n\nThe ship was ready. The world was not. On March 12, 2020, Branson and McAlpin wrote that Virgin was [postponing its inaugural season](https://www.virginvoyages.com/ahoy/stories/inaugural-season-update) until July 15, with the maiden voyage on August 7, 2020. Two days later, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a [No Sail Order](https://stacks.cdc.gov/view/cdc/135089) for cruise ships, effective March 14, 2020. Virgin later [announced plans to start sailing in October](https://www.virgin.com/about-virgin/latest/virgin-voyages-announces-plans-start-sailing-october) 2020. That did not happen either.\n\nScarlet Lady carried her first paying guests on August 6, 2021, from Portsmouth, England, according to Virgin's fact sheet. Her first sailing from the United States, the \"MerMaiden\" voyage, left PortMiami on October 6, 2021. Seatrade's headline that day was [\"At last, Scarlet Lady embarks on maiden voyage from Miami.\"](https://www.seatrade-cruise.com/ship-operations/at-last-scarlet-lady-embarks-on-maiden-voyage-from-miami) It offered four- and five-night trips to the Caribbean and Mexico. All passengers and crew had to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.\n\n\"After many years in the making, we are excited to officially launch Scarlet Lady and welcome sailors in the US aboard for an unforgettable experience,\" McAlpin said.\n\n## Valiant Lady, Resilient Lady and Brilliant Lady\n\nThe other three ships arrived on a slower and bumpier schedule than first planned.\n\n* **[Valiant Lady](https://cruisesfrog.com/ships/valiant-lady).** Fincantieri delivered her on July 1, 2021. [Her first voyage was on May 15, 2022](https://www.virginvoyages.com/dam/jcr:2ac6ce68-b4a7-4b07-b9be-e2b46489f422/Virgin%20Voyages%20Full%20Fact%20Sheet%202025.pdf), from Barcelona.\n* **[Resilient Lady](https://cruisesfrog.com/ships/resilient-lady).** She was floated out on July 2, 2021. Fincantieri [delivered her on December 9, 2022](https://www.fincantieri.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2022/fincantieri-resilient-lady-delivered), after she had been moored in Palermo since July. Her first voyage started May 14, 2023, from Athens, Virgin says.\n* **[Brilliant Lady](https://cruisesfrog.com/ships/brilliant-lady).** She was floated out on November 25, 2022. Virgin first planned to put her in service in late 2023, then delayed her, [Cruise Industry News reported](https://cruiseindustrynews.com/cruise-news/2025/09/brilliant-lady-kicks-off-maiden-season-in-new-york-city/). The line cited construction, supply chain and staffing challenges. She was delivered in early 2024 and made her debut on September 5, 2025, with a five-night trip from New York to Bermuda.\n\nBrilliant Lady is also the only one of the four that can sail through the Panama Canal. That has opened West Coast and Alaska trips. See our [Scarlet Lady](https://cruisesfrog.com/ships/scarlet-lady) page for the ship that started it all.\n\n## Who has run Virgin Voyages\n\nMcAlpin led the company from 2014 until September 2023. On September 8, 2023, Virgin announced a [$550 million funding round led by Ares Management](https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/virgin-voyages-announces-550-million-in-funding-led-by-ares-management-to-further-accelerate-growth-301921522.html). In the same release it said McAlpin was retiring as CEO and becoming chairman of the board.\n\nNirmal Saverimuttu took over as CEO. He came to the business as chief commercial officer in 2014 from Virgin Group, and in early 2021 became president and chief experience officer, according to the release. \"Nirmal is a great friend and experienced leader who lives and breathes the Virgin Voyages culture,\" McAlpin said.\n\n## Where things stand\n\nThe line has kept busy in recent weeks:\n\n* **Two million sailors.** On September 24, 2026, Virgin [celebrated two million times guests had chosen to sail with it](https://maritime-executive.com/corporate/virgin-voyages-celebrates-two-million-sailors), with a surprise for one repeat guest at its Miami terminal. It also extended Sailing Club perks through December 31, 2028. For more on the line's recent numbers, see our [look at how Virgin Voyages is doing](https://cruisesfrog.com/news/virgin-voyages-how-is-it-doing-october-2026).\n* **A storm detour.** Brilliant Lady's October 17 sailing from Los Angeles was [rerouted to San Francisco, San Diego and Ensenada](https://cruiseindustrynews.com/cruise-news/2026/10/virgin-confirms-new-itinerary-change-on-the-west-coast/) because of Hurricane Trudy.\n* **A kid-free flight and cruise.** On October 20, Virgin and JetBlue Vacations launched [\"Do Not Disturb,\"](https://www.virginvoyages.com/press/latest-releases/jetblue-vacations-virgin-voyages-adults-only-fly-cruise) a four-night Brilliant Lady sailing from Miami on March 4-8, 2027. It comes with a kid-free flight and costs $2,750 for two. Our [full story](https://cruisesfrog.com/news/virgin-voyages-jetblue-do-not-disturb-adults-only-flight-cruise-2027) has more.\n* **A looser booking rule.** On October 27, the line [reversed a planned one-year deadline](https://vvinsider.com/virgin-voyages-updates-mnvv-two-years-to-book-sail-anytime/) for My Next Virgin Voyage placeholders. Sailors keep two years to book, and the placeholder can now be used on any future sailing.\n* **A canceled charter sailing.** Virgin pulled a Brilliant Lady cruise from sale for a private charter. [We covered it here](https://cruisesfrog.com/news/virgin-voyages-cancels-brilliant-lady-october-2027-cruise-charter).\n\nVirgin Voyages remains a privately held company backed by Virgin Group and Bain Capital. Its fleet is the four ships Fincantieri built in Genoa. We found no announced order for a fifth.\n\n## Sources\n\nCruise Frog checked each date and figure in this story against the documents below.\n\n* Bain Capital: [December 2014 announcement](https://www.baincapital.com/news/virgin-group-announces-plans-make-waves-cruise-industry) and [June 2015 Miami announcement](https://www.baincapital.com/news/sir-richard-branson-raises-virgin-cruises-flag-miami)\n* Fincantieri: [2016 contracts](https://www.fincantieri.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2016/fincantieri-and-virgin-voyages-contracts-now-effective), [2018 fourth ship](https://www.fincantieri.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2018/fincantieri-will-build-fourth-ship-for-virgin-voyages), [Scarlet Lady delivery](https://www.fincantieri.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2020/fincantieri-delivers-scarlet-lady-the-first-virgin-voyages-ship), [Valiant Lady delivery and Resilient Lady float-out](https://www.fincantieri.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2021/fincantieri-double-milestone-for-virgin-voyages), [Brilliant Lady float-out](https://www.fincantieri.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2022/fincantieri-brilliant-lady-floated-out-in-sestri-ponente) and [Resilient Lady delivery](https://www.fincantieri.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2022/fincantieri-resilient-lady-delivered)\n* Virgin Voyages: [March 2020 postponement letter](https://www.virginvoyages.com/ahoy/stories/inaugural-season-update), [fact sheet](https://www.virginvoyages.com/dam/jcr:2ac6ce68-b4a7-4b07-b9be-e2b46489f422/Virgin%20Voyages%20Full%20Fact%20Sheet%202025.pdf) and [VoyageFair Choices release](https://www.virginvoyages.com/press/latest-releases/voyagefairchoices)\n* Marine Log on the [2016 rebrand](https://www.marinelog.com/news/branson-rebrands-cruise-venture-as-virgin-voyages/), Seatrade on the [2018 dining plans](https://www.seatrade-cruise.com/food-and-beverage/virgin-dining-no-buffets-main-dining-room-or-upcharges-lots-of-creative-choices) and the [2021 Miami debut](https://www.seatrade-cruise.com/ship-operations/at-last-scarlet-lady-embarks-on-maiden-voyage-from-miami)\n* CDC: [No Sail Order, March 14, 2020](https://stacks.cdc.gov/view/cdc/135089)\n* PR Newswire: [September 2023 funding and leadership release](https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/virgin-voyages-announces-550-million-in-funding-led-by-ares-management-to-further-accelerate-growth-301921522.html)\n* Cruise Industry News on [Brilliant Lady's debut](https://cruiseindustrynews.com/cruise-news/2025/09/brilliant-lady-kicks-off-maiden-season-in-new-york-city/) and the [West Coast reroute](https://cruiseindustrynews.com/cruise-news/2026/10/virgin-confirms-new-itinerary-change-on-the-west-coast/)\n* Maritime Executive on the [two million milestone](https://maritime-executive.com/corporate/virgin-voyages-celebrates-two-million-sailors), Virgin's [Do Not Disturb release](https://www.virginvoyages.com/press/latest-releases/jetblue-vacations-virgin-voyages-adults-only-fly-cruise) and VV Insider on the [booking rule change](https://vvinsider.com/virgin-voyages-updates-mnvv-two-years-to-book-sail-anytime/)","textStyle":"body","layout":"text"}]}
