About Borealis
Borealis is a Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines cruise ship of the Rotterdam class, in service since 1997. She measures 61,849 gross tons and carries 1,299 guests with a crew of 650. She sails World cruises, Canary Islands, Caribbean, Norwegian Fjords, Mediterranean, Northern Europe itineraries. We rate her 3.2 out of 5.
Borealis was built by Fincantieri in Trieste and entered service in November 1997 as Holland America Line's Rotterdam, the sixth ship of that name and HAL's flagship for 22 years. Fred. Olsen bought her in 2020 and she began cruising under her new name in July 2021. She measures 61,849 gross tons and carries 1,299 guests at standard occupancy in 702 cabins with a crew of about 650. Since January 2026 she has sailed adults-only, the only ship in the fleet to do so. Venues include the two-tier Aurora and Borealis restaurants, Colours & Tastes, the Observatory Lounge and a spa with a thermal suite.
She sails mainly from Southampton, with some Liverpool departures, on everything from short Belgium trips and Norwegian fjords to the Baltic, northern Spain (including a 2026 solar-eclipse cruise), the adults-only Canary Islands Fleet Fiesta cruise in November 2026 and a 2027 around-the-world voyage. She is also the ship for Fred. Olsen's 87-night Amazon and Antarctica Grand Voyage, departing Southampton on January 5, 2028, with 28 ports in 17 countries, river cruising to Manaus and Santarém and three days of scenic cruising in Antarctic waters; its launch in July 2026 produced the strongest single sales day in the line's history.

Cabins to avoid & quieter candidates
Deck 2 between cabin areas on Decks 1 and 3
Compare Deck 2 accommodation overlap
Compare the exact room footprint with cabins above and below; do not treat the entire deck as equally quiet. Avoid overlap with medical/service spaces, lift lobbies, stairs and connecting doors where possible.
Why we flag this
The ship-specific PDF shows accommodation across these decks, with public or service exceptions. This is a conditional layout preference, not a measured noise score or quiet guarantee. Check the source plan.
Deck 7 under occupied Deck 8 areas
Check Deck 7 below the pool deck
Match the cabin with pools, outdoor seating, dining and wellness footprints above. Ask about furniture setup, cleaning and opening hours wherever a public area overlaps the cabin.
Why we flag this
The official PDF places pool and public facilities on the deck above portions of this accommodation deck. The caution is about exact adjacency, not confirmed noise in every cabin. Check the source plan.
Deck 6 above occupied Deck 5 public venues
Check Deck 6 above lounges and dining
Compare the cabin with public lounges, entertainment and dining below, and any public venues sharing its own deck. Ask about scheduled music, events and venue hours for the overlapping area.
Why we flag this
The operator plan identifies major public venues on the lower deck beneath portions of this accommodation deck. It establishes layout, not a passenger disturbance complaint. Check the source plan.
Deck 3 terrace and promenade-side rooms
Check Promenade Deck cabin privacy
Check the exact window, terrace access and relationship to the public promenade before booking. Confirm whether pedestrians can pass outside and what privacy arrangements apply.
Why we flag this
The operator PDF identifies Terrace Cabins and a promenade on Deck 3. Public-deck proximity is a privacy/activity tradeoff, not a blanket statement that the cabins are bad. Check the source plan.
Location-based guidance, not measured noise or a guarantee of quiet. Flags identify areas to investigate, not every cabin on a deck. Check the exact room, connecting doors, accessibility and the plan for your sailing date. 2026 Q1 plan filename; PDF metadata does not state an edition date. Individual images isolate the deck diagrams; the complete operator PDF retains external venue labels, cabin categories and symbol definitions.. Reviewed 2026-10-22.
