Carnival Spirit is back on the Gulf Coast. The ship has returned to Mobile, Alabama, after a summer in Alaska and started its 2026-27 winter season of cruises to the Caribbean, the Bahamas and Florida, Cruise Industry News reported on Nov. 2.
It will also be the ship's last winter in Mobile for now. Carnival Spirit heads back to Seattle in April, and the larger Carnival Valor moves in behind it in May to start a year-round program from the Alabama port.
The first sailing and the big one
The season opened with a seven-night cruise to the Bahamas and Florida. It called at Key West, Half Moon Cay and Celebration Key, Carnival's newer destination on Grand Bahama.
The standout trip comes in January. On Jan. 17, 2027, Carnival Spirit leaves Mobile on a 14-night roundtrip to the Eastern and Southern Caribbean. Stops include:
- Turks and Caicos
- The Dominican Republic
- Puerto Rico
- St. Thomas
- Aruba
- Curaçao
- Jamaica
Two weeks is a long cruise for a Gulf Coast homeport, where most sailings run a week or less. For travelers within driving distance of Mobile, it is a rare chance to reach the ABC islands without a flight.
A rough trip to get here
Getting to Mobile was not smooth. The ship's 15-day repositioning cruise from Seattle ran into trouble. Technical problems delayed its departure, which knocked out a planned call at Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Then Hurricane Trudy forced the ship to skip Puntarenas, Costa Rica. In the end, guests on the long trip visited only one destination, according to Cruise Industry News.
Repositioning cruises are often sold for their mix of ports and sea days. Losing two stops turned this one into mostly a long run at sea.
What comes next for Mobile
| Ship | Season | Homeport |
|---|---|---|
| Carnival Spirit | Winter 2026-27 | Mobile |
| Carnival Spirit | Summer 2027 | Seattle (Alaska) |
| Carnival Valor | From mid-May 2027, year-round | Mobile |
| Carnival Spirit | Winter 2027-28 | Tampa |
Carnival Valor is the bigger ship of the two. Starting in mid-May, it will sail six- to 14-night cruises from Mobile to the Caribbean and the Bahamas. That gives Mobile year-round Carnival service for the first time in a long while.
Carnival Spirit has no return to Mobile on the books after this season. After its 2027 Alaska summer, the ship is set to spend winter 2027-28 sailing from Tampa.
Why Mobile matters
Mobile is a drive-to port for much of Alabama, Mississippi, the Florida Panhandle and parts of Georgia and Tennessee. Year-round service means locals can cruise in summer, too, not just in the winter months.
If you are booked
If you are on a Carnival Spirit sailing from Mobile this winter, nothing changes for you. If you were hoping to sail Spirit from Mobile again next winter, look at Tampa instead, or plan around Valor's new schedule.
