Ambassador Cruise Line

Ambassador Cruise Line is a British line based in Purfleet, Essex, founded in 2021 by Christian Verhounig, the former chief executive of Cruise & Maritime Voyages, which collapsed in 2020. Its main shareholder is the London investment firm Njord Partners. In January 2025 it merged with France's Compagnie Française de Croisières to form the Ambassador Group; the French operation was renamed Ambassador Croisières in September 2026, and a German brand, Ambassador Kreuzfahrten, launches in 2028.

About Ambassador Cruise Line

The fleet is made up of secondhand midsize ships: Ambience, the former Regal Princess, which began sailing in April 2022, and Ambition, the former AIDAmira, which followed in May 2023. Renaissance, the former Maasdam, came with the CFC merger; she serves the French market from Dunkirk and Marseille in summer and runs a Caribbean fly-cruise program from Barbados each winter. The former Oceania Sirena joins in May 2028 as Ambella, sailing from Bremerhaven and Kiel for German-speaking guests.

Ambassador focuses on no-fly cruises from UK ports, led by London Tilbury and including Liverpool, Bristol, Portsmouth, Newcastle, Dundee and Belfast. Summer trips go to the British Isles, Norway and Iceland, and winter voyages head to the Canaries, the Mediterranean, Scandinavia and the Caribbean, including 40-night-plus loops on Ambience. The line pitches affordable quality on classic ships and is adult-focused, aimed mainly at the over-50s, with some multigenerational sailings in summer. Since launch it has carried more than 130,000 guests, and its 2026-27 program went on sale in October 2026 with the strongest first-day sales in its history.

What Ambassador Cruise Line is known for

Ambassador has grown quickly since its 2022 debut, building its business around British travelers who want to cruise without flying, and it has collected trade and consumer awards, including several at the British Travel Awards 2025. Its appeal rests on sailings from regional ports close to home, fares positioned as affordable, and the relaxed atmosphere of ships of 1,200 to 1,500 guests with a high ratio of space per guest.

The trade-off is age: Ambience dates from 1991 and Ambition from 1999, and while both have been refitted, they lack the attractions of newer ships, and several dining venues carry extra charges. The line is young and growing fast through secondhand purchases, so the fleet and brand structure are still changing, and the adult focus means it is not designed for families outside a few summer sailings.

Cruising solo on Ambassador Cruise Line

Solo cabins on every ship

Ambassador is one of the more solo-friendly lines for British travelers: each of its three ships in service, Ambience, Ambition and the French-market Renaissance, has dedicated single cabins (78 on Ambition, according to the line, and about 100 on Renaissance, according to Cruise Trade News) sold with no supplement or a low one. On cruises of six nights or more, hosted solo socials begin with a welcome get-together, and solo guests can ask to be seated together in the main dining room. The midsize, adult-focused ships and no-fly departures from UK ports suit older solo travelers who like a traditional atmosphere.

Cabins for one
Single (sole-occupancy) cabins in selected grades; on Renaissance, Cabines Intérieures Solo, Vue Mer Solo and Balcon Solo
Single supplement
Dedicated single cabins in selected grades are priced for one person, with no supplement or a low one depending on the sailing, and the line flags departures with lower solo supplements. A solo guest in a twin cabin pays a supplement over the per-person fare. On Renaissance the three solo categories carry no supplement and other categories a variable one, and selected Caribbean departures between October 2026 and February 2027 waive it in every category.
Meeting other solo guests
On cruises of six nights or more Ambassador hosts solo socials, starting with a welcome get-together, and solo guests can ask for a table of four, six or eight in the main dining room, where the line seats solo travelers together where possible. On Renaissance, Ambassador Croisières offers solo guests a welcome meeting, social gatherings and, when possible, a shared table in the Vatel restaurant.
