A-ROSA River Cruises
A-ROSA is a German river cruise line based in Rostock with 15 ships on the Danube, the Rhine with the Main and Moselle, the Rhône and Saône, the Seine and Portugal's Douro. It sells mostly all-inclusive cruises with buffet dining and a casual dress code, and since 2014 it has also courted families with kids' clubs on holiday departures.

About A-ROSA River Cruises
The brand's first river cruises sailed on the Danube in 2002, when A-ROSA Bella and A-ROSA Donna began service under Seetours, a venture of Deutsche Seereederei and P&O. Deutsche Seereederei took over the brand in 2003; a 2009 management buyout made A-ROSA Flussschiff GmbH independent, and investors have owned it since, with the British investment manager Fidera the majority shareholder from 2025. Most of the fleet came from the Neptun Werft yard in Warnemünde between 2002 and 2014. The Douro ship A-ROSA Alva followed in 2019, the hybrid-powered A-ROSA Sena in 2022, and two smaller 2009-built ships, A-ROSA Alea and A-ROSA Clea, in 2024.
Fares come as Premium All-Inclusive, which adds a selection of drinks through the day to full board, or a cheaper Basic fare with meals only. Most ships have a sun-deck pool or whirlpool and a spa with saunas, the ships tie up close to town centers, and more than 650 shore excursions are sold separately. Many guests are German speakers; ships the line designates as international run in English and German, with English-speaking hosts and documents.
What A-ROSA River Cruises is known for
A-ROSA is one of the best-known river cruise brands in the German-speaking market, valued for its relaxed style, inclusive pricing and family sailings, on which children up to 15 travel free in lowest-deck cabins on most ships. German travel agents ranked it first among river cruise operators in a 2023 brand study published by the trade magazine fvw | TravelTalk, and A-ROSA Sena was named river ship of the year at Germany's Kreuzfahrt Guide Awards in 2023. Reviews often credit the value of the all-inclusive fare, spa areas that are large for river ships and the relaxed buffet dining.
The usual criticisms follow from the same model. Meals are mostly self-service buffets rather than plated dinners, and the atmosphere leans German; English speakers on mixed sailings sometimes report that English commentary and guiding were thinner than they expected. The older Neptun-built ships have no elevator, which limits access for guests with reduced mobility, and lowest-deck cabins have small windows close to the waterline.

- Food lovers
A-ROSA suits travelers who want an easygoing, all-inclusive river cruise with a German-European feel, including couples, friends and solo travelers who like buffet dining, a spa and plenty of time ashore. It is one of the better river options for families, especially aboard A-ROSA Sena, with its family cabins, Kids Club room and children's pool. English speakers should choose the ships A-ROSA designates as international, such as Sena, Aqua, Silva, Flora, Stella, Viva and Alva, where English hosts and materials are provided.
Travelers who expect plated multi-course dinners, an English-only program, shore excursions included in the fare or step-free access throughout the ship may be happier with lines aimed at the North American and British markets.
Cruising solo on A-ROSA River Cruises
A-ROSA has no cabins built for one: every cabin on its 15 river ships has two beds, so a solo traveler pays a surcharge to have one alone. The line markets single cruises with reduced surcharges, lowest on short Rhine and Danube trips, and its casual, all-inclusive style with buffet dining and a bar and lounge on board suits people who are happy to mingle at their own pace, although it publishes no hosted solo program. English speakers should pick one of the ships A-ROSA designates as international.
- Single supplement
- Solo guests book a two-bed cabin for sole use and pay a single cabin surcharge on the per-person fare. The line's FAQ gives surcharges from 30 percent, falling to 20 percent on selected dates; its 2026 and 2027 single-cruise listings range from 20 to 40 percent on Rhine and Danube cruises and from 40 to 80 percent on Rhône, Seine and Douro cruises.
